thursday 22 dec we finished tearing down one of the most ambitious events i've been involved in. we transformed 5 rooms of a church (the center for spiritual awareness) into a 30 hour party/workshop series/ solstice celebration... and we did it on the actual solstice, wednesday starting at noon, and ending 30 hours later at 6pm on wednesday.

i was head deco guy, and was therefore responsible for more people, space and art than i've ever had to fit into three days.

aesthetically it succeeded in way over the top levels, it was a great (but huge) space to work in, and there were lots of small places to create a tight vibe. financially, we broke even! on our first event! on top of all the things we did wrong! yay! ....

guerilla lantern parade!

requires:
lanterns in mixed or thematic styles
poles what to hang the lanterns from
people where to hang those poles off of

optional:
a direction
singing bowls, chimes, bells (nice light sounds)

the mix:
build some lanterns, get some costume, some people and a time. start
walking after the sun goes down. claim back alleys and residential
streets, small parks and river valley trails for the purpose of random
beautification. practice stunning the odd passer-by with delight, and
meditatively recreate our experience of winter nights. include in the
"plan" a stop at a city park with a fire pit, or maybe a hall party or
some co-conspiritors house whats got a big pot of hot chocolate.

the time:
arbitrary or symbolic, in honour of the occasion, or the occasion is to
honour us. all souls day is coming up (tuesday 1 november) and that is
the first day i'd like to aim for. after that, winter solstice is another
good day for lights. solene has a daytime parade to represent at in late
january.

the technology:
i'm working with a lot of cardboard and tissue paper, probably LEDs or
candles for light sources. i am definitly open to expanding my toolkit.

playshop:
cloudfactory (my studio, #8 8322 99th st) will host an open studio monday
24 oct, more or less all day.. 11am to 9pm probably. get your lights up!

parastra has been recruited for green team this year, to help dream a Leave No Trace picture into reality.

we will be creating led lanterns out of larger waterbottles and tagging personal waterbottles so as to encourage reuse.

we are looking for lots of film canisters for cigarette butts (one of the most insiduous forms of garbage created by people)
and i am still looking for marginally functional umbrellas to build lanterns out of.

looking for used umbrellas

for a big outdoor lighting project.

the idea is to paint the underside of umbrellas that are no longer useful to people, and attach battery powered LED light units to the handle, and hang these from inbetween trees at outdoor festivals. so if you are somewhere near me (new york, toronto, edmonton or ask i move around a lot) and have and umbrella lying around all sad and lonely...

ParAstra organizing for Om festival

It is my goal to light up a significant portion of Om festival this year. for those who don't know, you can go here

my nebulous plan includes

parastra taxi service-
a bunch of people with lit (paper or normal depending on weather) umbrellas walk around the dark pathways, illuminating the path for people who can't see.

lamplighters
lamps made from
-used frosted waterbottles (2-4L) and LED devices
-used umbrellas (waterproof kind), painted and lit up with LEDs
-many things i'm sure i haven't thought of yet

so..
looking for comments, interest, people to fly umbrellas,
*cheap/FREE/used/even kind of broken umbrellas, all shapes sizes colours, the waterproof kind. START COLLECTING!
